Kashi Ke Kotwal: Baba Kaal Bhairav

In the narrow, incense-heavy lanes of Vishweshwarganj, Varanasi, lies a temple that doesn't just ask for your devotion—it asks for your permission. Welcome to the Kaal Bhairav Mandir, the spiritual police station of the world’s oldest living city.

Whether you're a spiritual seeker or a curious traveler, here is everything you need to know about visiting the "Kotwal" (Chief Guardian) of Kashi.

🛡️ The Legend: Why He is the "Kotwal" of Kashi

In Varanasi, Lord Shiva is the King, but Kaal Bhairav is the administrator. Legend has it that when Lord Shiva created this fierce manifestation to humble Lord Brahma, Kaal Bhairav inadvertently committed the sin of Brahmanahatya (killing a Brahmin) by severing Brahma's fifth head.

The head stuck to his hand until he reached Varanasi, where it finally fell—a spot now known as Kapal Mochan Teerth. Shiva then ordained that Kaal Bhairav would stay in Kashi forever as its guardian. Even today, locals believe that no one can live in or even leave the city without his "visa" or blessing.

🏛️ What to Expect Inside

This isn't your typical "peace and quiet" temple. It’s raw, intense, and incredibly vibrant.

  • The Deity: You’ll only see the silver-masked face of the Lord, adorned with flower garlands. The rest of the idol is draped in cloth. He is often depicted seated on a dog (his vahana) and carrying a trident.

  • The Rituals: Look out for the priests wielding peacock feather fans (danda). They wave these over devotees to "dust off" sins and negative energies.

  • Unique Offerings: Unlike most Hindu temples, it is common to see devotees offering mustard oil, black sesame seeds, and occasionally even liquor—a nod to the deity’s tantric roots.

💡 Travel Tips for the Modern Pilgrim

  1. The "Kashi Visa": Tradition dictates that you should visit Kaal Bhairav before going to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple to seek permission to enter the city.

  2. The Black Thread: You’ll notice many people wearing a black thread (Bhairav Raksha Sutra) on their wrists. You can get one blessed at the temple for protection against the "evil eye."

  3. Footwear: You’ll need to leave your shoes at the stalls outside. It’s best to wear something easy to slip on and off.

  4. Photography: Generally restricted inside the inner sanctum. It's better to keep the phone tucked away and soak in the atmosphere.

📍Location

The temple is located about 1 km from Kashi Vishwanath and 5 km from Varanasi Junction.
